Dynamic screening in a two-species asymmetric exclusion process

Abstract

The dynamic scaling properties of the one-dimensional Burgers equation are expected to change with the inclusion of additional conserved degrees of freedom. We study this by means of one-dimensional (1D) driven lattice gas models that conserve both mass and momentum. The most elementary version of this is the Arndt-Heinzel-Rittenberg (AHR) process, which is usually presented as a two-species diffusion process, with particles of opposite charge hopping in opposite directions and with a variable passing probability. From the hydrodynamics perspective this can be viewed as two coupled Burgers equations, with the number of positive and negative momentum quanta individually conserved. We determine the dynamic scaling dimension of the AHR process from the time evolution of the two-point correlation functions, and find numerically that the dynamic critical exponent is consistent with simple Kardar-Parisi-Zhang- (KPZ) type scaling. We establish that this is the result of perfect screening of fluctuations in the stationary state. The two-point correlations decay exponentially in our simulations and in such a manner that in terms of quasiparticles, fluctuations fully screen each other at coarse grained length scales. We prove this screening rigorously using the analytic matrix product structure of the stationary state. The proof suggests the existence of a topological invariant. The process remains in the KPZ universality class but only in the sense of a factorization, as (KPZ)2. The two Burgers equations decouple at large length scales due to the perfect screening.

Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality in a two-component driven diffusive model

Pritha Dolai, Aditi Simha, Abhik Basu

We elucidate the universal spatio-temporal scaling properties of the time-dependent correlation functions in a two-component one-dimensional (1D) driven diffusive system that consists of two coupled asymmetric exclusion process. By using a perturbative renormalization group framework, we show that the relevant scaling exponents have values same as those for the 1D Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation. We thus establish that the model belongs to the 1D KPZ universality class.

Kardar-Parisi-Zhang universality in two-component driven diffusive models: Symmetry and renormalization group perspectives

Pritha Dolai, Aditi Simha, Abhik Basu

We elucidate the universal spatiotemporal scaling properties of the time-dependent correlation functions in a class of two-component one-dimensional (1D) driven diffusive system that consists of two coupled asymmetric exclusion processes. By using a perturbative renormalization group framework, we show that the relevant scaling exponents have values same as those for the 1D Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation. We connect these universal scaling exponents with the symmetries of the model equations. We thus establish that these models belong to the 1D KPZ universality class.

Dynamic criticality far from equilibrium: One-loop flow of Burgers-Kardar-Parisi-Zhang systems with broken Galilean invariance

Philipp Strack

Burgers-Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) scaling has recently (re-) surfaced in a variety of physical contexts, ranging from anharmonic chains to quantum systems such as open superfluids, in which a variety of random forces may be encountered and/or engineered. Motivated by these developments, we here provide a generalization of the KPZ universality class to situations with long-ranged temporal correlations in the noise, which purposefully break the Galilean invariance that is central to the conventional KPZ solution. We compute the phase diagram and critical exponents of the KPZ equation with 1/f noise (KPZ1/f) in spatial dimensions 1≤d<4 using the dynamic renormalization group with a frequency cutoff technique in a one-loop truncation. Distinct features of KPZ1/f are (i) a generically scale-invariant, rough phase at high noise levels that violates fluctuation-dissipation relations and exhibits hyperthermal statistics even in d=1, (ii) a fine-tuned roughening transition at which the flow fulfills an emergent thermal-like fluctuation-dissipation relation, that separates the rough phase from (iii) a massive phase in 1<d<4 (in d=1 the interface is always rough). We point out potential connections to nonlinear hydrodynamics with a reduced set of conservation laws and noisy quantum liquids.

Anomalous ballistic scaling in the tensionless or inviscid Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation

Enrique Rodríguez-Fernández, Silvia N. Santalla, Mario Castro +1 more

The one-dimensional Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation is becoming an overarching paradigm for the scaling of nonequilibrium, spatially extended, classical and quantum systems with strong correlations. Recent analytical solutions have uncovered a rich structure regarding its scaling exponents and fluctuation statistics. However, the zero surface tension or zero viscosity case eludes such analytical solutions and has remained ill-understood. Using numerical simulations, we elucidate a well-defined universality class for this case that differs from that of the viscous case, featuring intrinsically anomalous kinetic roughening (despite previous expectations for systems with local interactions and time-dependent noise) and ballistic dynamics. The latter may be relevant to recent quantum spin chain experiments which measure KPZ and ballistic relaxation under different conditions. We identify the ensuing set of scaling exponents in previous discrete interface growth models related with isotropic percolation, and show it to describe the fluctuations of additional continuum systems related with the noisy Korteweg-de Vries equation. Along this process, we additionally elucidate the universality class of the related inviscid stochastic Burgers equation.

Universality in many-body driven systems with an umbilic point

Johannes Schmidt, Žiga Krajnik, Vladislav Popkov

Abstract We study stationary fluctuations of conserved slow modes in a two-lane model of hardcore particles which are expected to show universal behavior. Specifically, we focus on the properties of fluctuations at a special umbilic point where the characteristic velocities coincide. At large space and time scales, fluctuations are described by a system of stochastic Burgers equations studied recently in Roy et al (2024 J. Stat. Mech. 2024 033209). Our data suggest coupling-dependent scaling functions and, even more surprisingly, coupling-dependent dynamical scaling exponents, distinct from Kardar–Parisi–Zhang scaling exponent typical for surface growth processes.

Spectrum of a multi-species asymmetric simple exclusion process on a ring

Chikashi Arita, Atsuo Kuniba, Kazumitsu Sakai +1 more

The spectrum of the Hamiltonian (Markov matrix) of a multi-species asymmetric simple exclusion process on a ring is studied. The dynamical exponent concerning the relaxation time is found to coincide with the one-species case. It implies that the system belongs to the Kardar–Parisi–Zhang or Edwards–Wilkinson universality classes depending on whether the hopping rate is asymmetric or symmetric, respectively. Our derivation exploits a poset structure of the particle sectors, leading to a new spectral duality and inclusion relations. The Bethe ansatz integrability is also demonstrated.
