Abstract

We determine the energetically lowest-lying states in the BEC-BCS crossover regime of $s$-wave interacting two-component Fermi gases under harmonic confinement by solving the many-body Schr\"odinger equation using two distinct approaches. Essentially exact basis set expansion techniques are applied to determine the energy spectrum of systems with $N=4$ fermions. Fixed-node diffusion Monte Carlo methods are applied to systems with up to $N=20$ fermions, and a discussion of different guiding functions used in the Monte Carlo approach to impose the proper symmetry of the fermionic system is presented. The energies are calculated as a function of the $s$-wave scattering length ${a}_{s}$ for $N=2--20$ fermions and different mass ratios $\ensuremath{\kappa}$ of the two species. On the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) and BCS sides, our energies agree with analytically determined first-order correction terms. We extract the scattering length and the effective range of the dimer-dimer system up to $\ensuremath{\kappa}=20$. Our energies for the strongly interacting trapped system in the unitarity regime show essentially no shell structure, and are well described by a simple expression whose functional form can be derived using the local density approximation, with one or two parameters. The universal parameter $\ensuremath{\xi}$ for the trapped system for various $\ensuremath{\kappa}$ is determined, and comparisons with results for the homogeneous system are presented.

Energetics and structural properties of trapped two-component Fermi gases

J. von Stecher, Chris H. Greene, D. Blume

Using two different numerical methods, we study the behavior of two-component Fermi gases interacting through short-range $s$-wave interactions in a harmonic trap. A correlated Gaussian basis-set expansion technique is used to determine the energies and structural properties, i.e., the radial one-body densities and pair distribution functions, for small systems with either even or odd $N$, as functions of the $s$-wave scattering length and the mass ratio $\ensuremath{\kappa}$ of the two species. Particular emphasis is put on a discussion of the angular momentum of the system in the BEC-BCS crossover regime. At unitarity, the excitation spectrum of the four-particle system with total angular momentum $L=0$ is calculated as a function of the mass ratio $\ensuremath{\kappa}$. The results are analyzed from a hyperspherical perspective, which offers unique insight into the problem. Additionally, fixed-node diffusion Monte Carlo calculations are performed for equal-mass Fermi gases with up to $N=30$ atoms. We focus on the odd-even oscillations of the ground-state energy of the equal-mass unitary system having up to $N=30$ particles, which are related to the excitation gap of the system. Furthermore, we present a detailed analysis of the structural properties of these systems.

BEC-BCS crossover of a trapped Fermi gas without using the local density approximation

Rocío Jáuregui, R. Paredes, G. Toledo Sánchez

We perform a variational quantum Monte Carlo simulation of an interacting Fermi gas confined in a three dimensional harmonic potential. This gas is considered as the precursor system from which a molecular bosonic gas is formed. Based on the results of two-body calculations for trapped atoms, we propose a family of variational many-body wave functions that takes into account the qualitative different nature of the Bardeen-Cooper-Schieffer and Bose-Einstein condensate regimes as a function of the scattering length. Energies, densities, and correlation functions are calculated and compared with previous results for homogeneous gases. Universality tests at the unitarity limit are performed including the verification of the virial relation and the evaluation of the $\ensuremath{\beta}$ parameter.

BCS-BEC crossover with unequal-mass fermions

Roberto B. Diener, Mohit Randeria

We investigate the crossover from BCS pairing to molecular Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in an atomic gas with two fermion species with masses ${m}_{\ensuremath{\uparrow}}\ensuremath{\ne}{m}_{\ensuremath{\downarrow}}$ tuned through a Feshbach resonance. We present results for the $T=0$ equation of state as a function of the scattering length including the effects of Gaussian fluctuations about the mean field ground state. We compute the ground state energy as a function of ${m}_{\ensuremath{\uparrow}}/{m}_{\ensuremath{\downarrow}}$ at unitarity and find excellent agreement with the quantum Monte Carlo result for ${m}_{\ensuremath{\uparrow}}/{m}_{\ensuremath{\downarrow}}=6.67$ for a $^{40}\mathrm{K}$-$^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ mixture. We show that the dimer scattering length in the BEC limit as a function of ${m}_{\ensuremath{\uparrow}}/{m}_{\ensuremath{\downarrow}}$ compares well with the exact four-body results of Petrov et al. [J. Phys. B 38, S645 (2005)]. We also derive the condition for trapping frequencies to obtain an unpolarized gas in a harmonic trap.

Equation of state of a polarized Fermi gas in the Bose-Einstein-condensate limit

Florent Alzetto, X. Leyronas

We present a theoretical study of the BEC-BCS crossover in the Bose-Einstein-condensate (BEC) regime in the case of an unequal number of fermions of two species. We take full account of the composite nature of the dimers made of fermions. In the limit of low densities, we calculate the ground-state energy of the system, or equivalently the chemical potentials of each species, as well as the one-particle gap and the energy of an ``impurity'' immersed in a Fermi sea. For the chemical potentials we go up to order $(\mathrm{density}){}^{4/3}$. The results found involve the exact atom-dimer ${a}_{\mathrm{AD}}$ and dimer-dimer ${a}_{\mathrm{DD}}$ scattering lengths and therefore include the three- and four-body problems in the many-body problem. We briefly comment on the importance of the different mean-field corrections for recent experiments.

Equation of State of a Fermi Gas in the BEC-BCS Crossover: A Quantum Monte Carlo Study

G. E. Astrakharchik, Jordi Boronat, J. Casulleras +1 more

We calculate the equation of state of a two-component Fermi gas with attractive short-range interspecies interactions using the fixed-node diffusion Monte Carlo method. The interaction strength is varied over a wide range by tuning the value a of the s-wave scattering length of the two-body potential. For a>0 and a smaller than the inverse Fermi wave vector our results show a molecular regime with repulsive interactions well described by the dimer-dimer scattering length a(m)=0.6a. The pair correlation functions of parallel and opposite spins are also discussed as a function of the interaction strength.

QUANTUM MONTE CARLO STUDY OF THE GROUND-STATE PROPERTIES OF A FERMI GAS IN THE BCS-BEC CROSSOVER

S. Giorgini, G. E. Astrakharchik, Jordi Boronat +1 more

The ground-state properties of a two-component Fermi gas with attractive short-range interactions are calculated using the fixed-node diffusion Monte Carlo method. The interaction strength is varied over a wide range by tuning the value a of the s-wave scattering length of the two-body potential. We calculate the energy per particle, the one- and two-body density matrix as a function of the interaction strength. Results for the momentum distribution of the atoms, as obtained from the Fourier transform of the one-body density matrix, are reported as a function of the interaction strength. Off-diagonal long-range order in the system is investigated through the asymptotic behavior of the two-body density matrix. The condensate fraction of pairs is calculated in the unitary limit and on both sides of the BCS-BEC crossover.
