Abstract

Following an approach based on generating function method phase space characteristics of Landau system are studied in the autonomous framework of deformation quantization. Coherent state property of generating functions is established and marginal probability densities along canonical coordinate lines are derived. Well defined analogs of inner product, Cauchy-Bunyakowsy-Schwarz inequality and state functional have been defined in phase space and they have been used in analyzing the uncertainty structures. The general form of the uncertainty relation for two real-valued functions is derived and uncertainty products are computed in states described by Wigner functions. Minimum uncertainty state property of the standard coherent states is presented and uncertainty structures in the case of phase space generalized coherent states are analyzed.

Autonomous generation of all Wigner functions and marginal probability densities of Landau levels

Demircioglu, B, Abdullah Verçin

Generation of Wigner functions of Landau levels and determination of their symmetries and generic properties are achieved in the autonomous framework of deformation quantization. Transformation properties of diagonal Wigner functions under space inversion, time reversal and parity transformations are specified and their invariance under a four-parameter subgroup of symplectic transformations are established. A generating function for all Wigner functions is developed and this has been identified as the phase-space coherent state for Landau levels. Integrated forms of generating function are used in generating explicit expressions of marginal probability densities on all possible two dimensional phase-space planes. Phase-space realization of unitary similarity and gauge transformations as well as some general implications for the Wigner function theory are presented.

On theq-deformed coherent states of a generalizedf-oscillator

Marcelo A. Marchiolli

Adopting the framework of the generalized q -deformed Heisenberg–Weyl algebra , we present a mathematical procedure which leads us to obtain analytical expressions for a general class of q -deformed coherent states associated with the different patterns of the energy spectrum exhibited by the nonlinear f -oscillator. In particular, we establish the properties of a small group of q -deformed coherent states for α > γ > 0 with emphasis on the resolution of unity. As an application of these properties, we investigate the Robertson–Schrödinger uncertainty relation and the squeezing effect for the deformed coordinate and momentum operators, which are defined in terms of the abstract elements of this algebra. Furthermore, we also obtain the Wigner function and the correct quantum-mechanical marginal distributions in phase space.

Negative Probability and Uncertainty Relations

Thomas Curtright, COSMAS K. ZACHOS

A concise derivation of all uncertainty relations is given entirely within the context of phase-space quantization, without recourse to operator methods, to the direct use of Weyl’s correspondence, or to marginal distributions of x and p. Phase-space quantization is the third autonomous and logically complete formulation of quantum mechanics beyond the conventional ones based on operators in Hilbert space or path integrals [1, 2, 3]. It is free of operators and wavefunctions: observables and matrix elements are computed through phasespace integrals of c-number functions (“classical kernels”) weighted by a Wigner function (WF) [4, 3]. This is a phase-space distribution function which is not positive semi-definite, and constitutes the Weyl correspondent [5] of the density matrix in the conventional formulation, fmn(x,p) = 1 2π dye −iyp ψ ∗ m(x − 2 y)ψn(x + 2 y) = f ∗ nm(x,p). Coherent states and the role of the affine group in the quantum mechanics of the Morse potential

Bence Molnár, M. G. Benedict, J. Bertrand

The coherent states of the Morse potential that have been obtained earlier from supersymmetric quantum mechanics, are shown to be connected with the representations of the affine group of the real line and some of its extensions. This relation is similar to the one between the Heisenberg-Weyl group and the coherent states of the harmonic oscillator. The states that minimize the uncertainty product of the generators of the affine Lie algebra are shown to contain all the coherent states of the Morse oscillator plus the intelligent states of the Morse Hamiltonians with different shape parameter s . The representations of the central extension of the affine group denoted by G 0 and its further extension will be shown to define the phase space relevant to the problem by choosing an appropriate orbit of the coadjoint representation of . This allows one to construct a generalized Wigner function on this phase space, which is again essentially in the same relation with the affine group, as the ordinary Wigner function with the Heisenberg-Weyl group.

Generalized uncertainty relations and coherent and squeezed states

D. A. Trifonov

Characteristic uncertainty relations and their related squeezed states are briefly reviewed and compared in accordance with the generalizations of three equivalent definitions of canonical coherent states. The standard SU(1, 1) coherent states are shown to be the unique states that minimize the Schrödinger uncertainty relation for every pair of the three generators and the Robertson relation for the three generators. The characteristic uncertainty inequalities are naturally extended to the case of several states. It is shown that these inequalities can be written in the equivalent complementary form.

Probabilistic aspects of the Wigner function

Constantin V. Usenko

The Wigner function of quantum systems is an effective instrument for constructing an approximate classical description of the systems for which the classical approximation is possible. In recent years, the Wigner function formalism has been applied as well to seek indications of specific quantum properties of quantum systems leading to the impossibility of constructing the classical approximation. Used most of all as such an indication is the existence of negative values in the Wigner function for specific states of the quantum system being studied. The existence of such values itself prejudices the probabilistic interpretation of the Wigner function, though for an arbitrary observable depending jointly on the coordinate and the momentum of the quantum system just the Wigner function provides an effective instrument for calculating the average value and the other statistical characteristics. In this paper, a probabilistic interpretation of the Wigner function based on coordinating a theoretical probabilistic definition of the probability density, with restrictions to a physically small domain of phase space due to the uncertainty principle, is proposed.
